About Me

Hi, I Am Kendra Nicholson

I am a storyteller.

My mom likes to talk about when I was three years old, and I was so shy that I would hide behind her legs until she would ask me to tell people the story of the “Three Billy Goats Gruff”. I would step out in front of her, and share the story with different voices for each of the goats and the troll. When I was finished, I would immediately run back and hide behind her again.

The stories have changed over the years. I have done theatre since high school, where I told scripted stories. I discovered improvisation later in life, and was able to create stories in the moment with scene partners.

Then I lost my son to suicide, and I began sharing my truth. I started with writing. I shared stories about Trevor’s life, because I desperately wanted him to be remembered for something other than his final impulsive act. I shared these stories with my friends and family on Facebook.

Next, I wrote a book that I self-published on what would have been Trevor’s 21st birthday. It’s the fictional story of a young boy who loses his big brother to suicide, and how it changes his life in the aftermath. It isn’t a true story, but there is a great deal of truth in it, along with a great deal of Trevor’s personality.

Now it’s time for me to tell stories in a different way through public speaking. I want to share Trevor’s story. I want to share my family’s mental health history, and the secrets I have lived with all of my life. I want to talk about my journey with grief, and the things that have helped me move forward, including applying the guidelines of improvisation to my grief journey. I want to talk about how we can help other people who are grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide.

I have a lot of stories to tell, and I’m ready to do it.

My focus

I have spent over 20 years volunteering at my own children's schools and tutoring at-risk children in the urban Midwest as well as homeless children in Greater Los Angeles.

I spent time as a Comedy Improv Instructor in Long Beach, California teaching improvisation skills for life to an adult community.

My life experience and continued recovery as a suicide survivor has uniquely positioned me to not only share my son's story, but also to offer a perspective on the benefits of utilizing fundamental skills of improvisation in the journey of grief.
